How to choose a vacuum furnace according to the heat treatment process

How to choose a vacuum furnace according to the heat treatment process

Selecting a vacuum furnace is not simply about chamber size or maximum temperature.
It is about the result you need to achieve on your components.

Hardening, brazing, Low Pressure Carburising (LPC) and diffusion bonding require very different process conditions. Vacuum levels, thermal uniformity, cooling dynamics, load handling and parameter control must all be designed around the final application.

For this reason, at HTS Vacuum Furnaces, system configuration always starts from the process, not from a machine catalogue.

Key technical criteria

Every project considers fundamental factors such as operating temperature, load dimensions and weight, materials, production volumes, required atmosphere, precision and repeatability.

Customers do not always have all this information clearly defined. In such cases, we collect alternative data, such as part geometry or required performance, to determine the most suitable solution.

If furnace size is unclear, we analyse component dimensions and throughput. If the model is uncertain, we start from the metallurgical result to be achieved.

From requirement to solution: practical examples

Application experience often makes the difference.

In some projects, defining the loading axis was crucial to handle complex geometries while ensuring uniform treatment.
In a brazing application involving dissimilar materials, preliminary testing of different fillers defined the working temperatures and directly influenced the furnace selection.
In other cases, trials at different vacuum levels and cooling pressures enabled us to optimise operating conditions, reducing unnecessary investment while maximising performance.

A consultancy-driven approach

An oversized furnace increases costs and energy consumption. An undersized one limits productivity and quality. The right solution is a system tailored to the real process needs.

That is why HTS combines engineering, testing, know-how and training. We deliver not only equipment, but transferable expertise that helps customers fully exploit their technology.

With more than 20 years of experience and hundreds of installations in aerospace, automotive and energy sectors, we design vacuum furnaces that turn production requirements into stable, repeatable and competitive processes.

Because choosing the right furnace means choosing process success.
